Bible Study - LUKE: Wingspan

1. Share something you are thankful for or are celebrating. If you could get yourself anything for Christmas this year, what would it be? Why?

2. Where are you experiencing stress or anxiety? Share that with the group, and ask your group to be praying with you about that.

3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?

4. Read Luke 1:26-56. Look at the notes in your Luke Journal related to this passage. What stood out to you the most from these readings? What questions did you make note of that were raised for you by these readings? Did anything in these readings prompt you to do anything? To change anything? To believe something new?

5. At The Branch we say a disciple is someone who is growing in her ability to hear God and walk in obedience to what she hears. How do you see Mary being an example of that? Do you think you are more like Mary or Zechariah when it comes to hearing and obeying?

6. Read Luke 1:31-33. Make a list of the things Gabriel says will be true of Mary’s son. Why do you think Gabriel does not give Mary a comprehensive list of what Jesus will do or what He will be like?

7. How does Mary’s encounter with the angel Gabriel end? Chris made the point that Mary was the first person that Jesus lived in and that it is God’s desire for Jesus to live in all of us. Have you surrendered to God’s desire for His Son to live in you? It what ways have you experienced a change of heart, attitude or behavior as a result of Jesus living in you?

8. When Mary surrendered herself to God, many things in her life changed. Chris pointed out that Jesus “overshadowed” her plans, her status, her limitations and her isolation. Which of these that Jesus overshadows in Mary’s life connects with you - Your Plans? Status? Limitations? Isolation? Why?

9. Gabriel tells Mary that nothing is impossible for God. What does Gabriel point to as a way of showing Mary that nothing is impossible for God? Is there a matter in your life that you need to say - “Lord, this is not outside of your reach – let it be to me according to your word”?

10. In the next 24-48 hours, what simple next step could you take in obedience to what you’ve learned from your time in God’s Word? Who would benefit from hearing what you’ve learned this week? Will you share it with them?
