Bible Study - LUKE: Jesus the Partier

  1. Read Luke 15:1-2.  We’ve been in the Gospel of Luke for a few months. Does the way the religious leaders characterize Jesus surprise you? Why do you think it surprised them?  Are you expecting Jesus to do something different at this point in his ministry? What does this communicate about the life and ministry of Jesus Christ?

  2. Read Luke 15:3-10.  These two stories illustrate a painstaking search for something of great value. What do these stories teach us about the heart of God for his people? What do these stories teach us about repentance?

  3. Read Luke 15:11-32In the story of the prodigal, the younger son makes a demand for his share of his father’s property.  Chris mentioned that this would have been shocking to the hearers. Why? To some degree, this reflects a heart of pride and entitlement. In what ways do you approach God like this?

  4. Read Luke 15:17-24. What does the younger son do when he comes to his senses? What does the text show us about the father’s pursuit of his son? How is this story different than the previous two parables?  Why is this Gospel message so important to share with others?
  5. Chris highlighted 3 common threads in these stories: being lost, being sought and found, and being celebrated. Which of these themes stands out to you?  Why?

  6. Romans 8:38-39 reads, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” What is so powerful and comforting about this promise?

  7. In the next 24-48 hours, what simple next step could you take in obedience to what you’ve learned from your time in God’s Word? Who would benefit from hearing what you’ve learned this week?  Will you share it with them?
