Bible Study - ROMANS 8 GOD FOR US: Child of God

  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced or witnessed his faithfulness since our last meeting?

  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?

  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?

  4. Read Romans 8:14-17 aloud 2 or 3 times.  What part of this passage grabs your attention?  Which theme or idea is the most impactful or meaningful for you right now?  Why?

  5. What do you think it means to be “led by the Spirit of God?”  Do you think of the Holy Spirit as more of force or a person?  How is following or relating to a person different than interacting with a force or power?  How might it help you to follow the lead of the Spirit of God if you were more conscious of the fact that the Holy Spirit is a person and not just a power or force?

  6. How do you normally address God when you pray?  What is the difference between saying “Sovereign God” and “Dear Father”?  Why do you think the Spirit is wanting us to remember that in Christ we have been adopted into sonship?  Verse 15 makes the assumption that prior to being in Christ, we are living in fear.  Do you think most people who are not in Christ, live in fear?  Why?  If they do what are they afraid of?

  7. Read Matthew 5:11-12.  What do you think Romans 8:17 means when it says we are to share in the sufferings of Christ?  What are some ways we might share in the sufferings of Christ that are short of being martyred for our faith?  Is suffering like Christ something we should seek or will it just happen?

  8. What does it mean to you to be an “heir of God and co-heir with Christ?”  What is it about heaven that you find the most compelling?  Is the glory of your eternal inheritance so great that you would be willing to suffer exactly like Christ or Paul?

  9.  In the next 24-48 hours, what simple next step could you take in obedience to what you’ve learned from your time in God’s Word? Who would benefit from hearing what you’ve learned this week?  Will you share it with them?  How can we pray for that person?
