Bible Study - ROMANS 8 GOD FOR US: Friends in High Places

  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced his goodness and faithfulness?

  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?

  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?

  4. Read Romans 8:31. Prior to this section Paul has been writing about all of the ways in which God is working for us, in us and through us. He summarizes those truths by asking this powerful question: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”  What stands out to you about this? Which words capture your attention?

  5. Now read Romans 8:32. Paul definitively states that God did not spare his own Son Jesus Christ. What do you notice about Paul’s language in this verse? How does this reveal the nature and depth of God’s love?

  6. In light of verse 32, Chris mentioned: “If something hasn’t happened yet, if the provision hasn’t come, if the breakthrough hasn’t occurred – it’s not because God is against us.” In what ways have you experienced this or lived this?

  7. Verses 33-34a state: “Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one.” On the cross, Jesus absorbed the punishment that should have been ours and he died in our place that we might be forgiven of our sins. We are now right with God. Talk about this reality. What kind of implications does this have for us here and now?

  8. In Christ, we are no longer slaves to sin and death. We can enjoy freedom from our past sins and former way of living. But the past can still haunt us. How can we experience more freedom and confidence in Jesus?

  9. Is there someone in your life who needs to hear the Good News of the Gospel? How can we join you in praying for that?
