Bible Study - PENTECOST SUNDAY: It's Only 9 in the Morning

Sermon-Based Bible Study – May 31, 2020
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced his love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Begin by reading Acts 2:1-4. Without jumping to any interpretation or application points, think about these verses. What is the writer communicating? Who are the ‘characters’ in this text? What are they doing?
    • In the OT, we read that God’s people encountered God’s presence in a powerful way on Mount Sinai. What are some similarities between that encounter and this story in Acts 2? (Chris mentioned some of these things in his sermon.)
    • Verse 4 tells us that the Spirit “enabled” them. What does this teach us about the role of the Spirit in our lives? Where does our empowerment and enablement come from?
  5. Acts 2:12 tells us that the crowd was ‘amazed and perplexed’. Why might the author include this? How does this shape our understanding of the Spirit’s power? (ex: we cannot fully comprehend God, we worship a mighty and powerful God, etc.)
  6. Chris mentioned, “When the Spirit moves it’s for the sake of others beyond us.” The Spirit first moved in the upper room, but the disciples went out from there and proclaimed God’s greatness to others. How does this principle keep us from being self-focused?
  7. Chris also noted, “The move of the Spirit is always for the sake of helping us and others move closer to Jesus.” So, Jesus is the point of it all. How has God used other people to help you walk more closely with Jesus?
  8. What is the Spirit of God saying to you right now? How is the Spirit empowering you to serve God and serve others?
