Bible Study - FINDING THE STRENGTH: Fresh Air and Flies

Sermon-Based Bible Study – September 6, 2020
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced his love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Read 1 Corinthians 14:1-4.  Chris said that this passage provides a description of a prophetic moment as a work of the Spirit through someone speaking to give another strength, encouragement, and comfort.
    • Can you recount a time when you received a word of comfort, strength and encouragement from another person that you know came from the Lord?
    • Can you recount an occasion where the Lord gave you a word for someone else that was for their comfort, strength and encouragement?
  5. Have you ever received a word from Lord through another person that was difficult or challenging to hear but ultimately it strengthened and encouraged you?
  6. Read 1 Corinthians 14:29 and 1 Thessalonians 5:19.  What do these passages suggest our attitude should be when it comes to receiving a “prophetic word”?  What are some practical things we can do to make sure we properly “weigh” or “test” a prophetic word?
  7. When It comes to receiving a prophetic word Chris suggested that when we are unsure of whether the word is from the Lord we should: be gracious with the one sharing; seek the Lord by asking a few questions; and allow Christ-centered friends to weigh in.  Which of these suggestions is challenging for you? Why?  Which comes easy? Why?
  8. Read 1 Corinthians 13:9.  What does this passage seem to imply about a prophetic word? When it comes to sharing a prophetic word with another person, Chris suggested that we make sure: it’s consistent with God’s nature and will as revealed in scripture; share humbly and in love; and leave the results to God.  Which of these is the most challenging for you?  Which comes the easiest?
