Bible Study - WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? - Wise Up

Sermon-Based Bible Study –February 14, 2021
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Read 1 Corinthians 6:12.  Chris suggested that God cares about more than just whether something is: wrong; over the line; or illegal.  Why might that be?  What do you think Paul is trying to get at in this passage by saying “not everything is beneficial?”  Why would Paul counsel caution even with permissible things?
  5. Each of us have differing strengths, weaknesses and experiences.  Which “permissible things” pose the biggest threat of “mastering” you?  Which permissible things can you engage with freely because they pose little to no risk of dominating your life?  Have you ever used an excuse (like I’m not doing anything wrong; People do this all the time; I’m not hurting anyone; I can handle it; or There’s no law against it) to justify a permissible thing that was not wise for you?  How did that work out?
  6. Read Ephesians 5:15-18.  Which phrase in this passage stands out to you the most? Why?  Chris said that living wisely involves recognizing “the path” we’re getting on in the decision we’re making.  What does it mean to say we “recognize the path we are getting on, with the decision we are making”?
  7. In Chapter 5 of his book Better Decisions Fewer Regrets, Andy Stanley suggests that when it comes to making decisions we should ask, “What is the wise thing to do?”  Why do you think he labels this question the “Maturity Question?”  In what way might your past experience influence how you answer the Maturity Question in a particular situation?
  8. Read James 1:5.  Chris referenced something Louise Penny wrote “The four sentences that lead to wisdom. "‘I’m sorry’; ‘I was wrong’; ‘I need help’; and ‘I don’t know.’”  What is the connection between humility and wisdom?
  9. Read Matthew 7:23 and 1 Corinthians 1:24.  What does closely following Jesus have to do with wisdom or making a wise decision?
  10. What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word?  Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
