Bible Study - ANCIENT FUTURE - Grace Oriented

Sermon-Based Bible Study – September 26, 2021

  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?  Take a minute to thank God for the offering to support Pioneer Bible Translators and The Last 200 project that we are partnering with them to complete.
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Read John 1:14.  What do you think it means to say that Jesus “came from the Father full of grace and truth?”  In this context what do you think John means by “grace?”  How would you define the term “grace?”
  5. Read Acts 11:20-23.  This passage says that Barnabas saw what the grace of God had done.  What did he see?  What does the phrase “the Lord’s hand was with them” mean?  How does that impact how Barnabas evaluates the situation?  In what way is the phrase “the Lord’s hand was with them” similar to the term “grace?”
  6. Chris discussed three different ways the term “grace” is used in the texts we considered this weekend related to the church in Antioch, namely:
    • Grace as the activity of God in or around you;
    • Grace as the care of God to entrust someone else to; and
    • Grace as a primary message of the gospel.
  7. Were any of these meanings or uses of the term “grace” new for you?  How do these help you better understand the role of grace in your salvation?  In your transformation?  In your calling?  Of these three aspects of grace, which has been the most impactful for you recently? When in your life have you received strength/resources to do what you could not have done on your own?
  8. Read Ephesians 2:8-9.  What is required or necessary for a person to receive grace from God?
  9. What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word?  Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
