Bible Study - THE HOLY SPIRIT PPP - The Deposit

Sermon-Based Bible Study – November 14, 2021
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for, or are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Read 2 Corinthians 1:21; 5:5 and Ephesians 1:14.  These passages refer to the Holy Spirit as a “deposit” or “guarantee.”  How does thinking of the Holy Spirit as a deposit help you understand the work and role of the Holy Spirit better?  Does it challenge or bring into question any ideas you previously had about the Holy Spirit?  Why?
  5. Read Ephesians 1:7 and Romans 8:22-23.  Chris talked out the difference between the redemption of our souls and the redemption of our bodies. Does that distinction help you when it comes to dealing with pain or disappointment in the here and now?  What is the promise of the Romans passage?  How does that promise encourage you in the here and now?  What role does the Holy Spirit play in the here and now in regard to that promise?
  6. Read Psalm 37:3-4.  What does it mean to say that when we see the Holy Spirit as a deposit it helps us to be eternally minded about our bodies and our circumstances?  How does seeing the Holy Spirit as a deposit help when things aren’t going the way we had hoped?  How does it help when things are going well?
  7. Read Luke 11:2-4.  What does it mean to pray for God’s Kingdom to come on earth?  What does God’s Kingdom look like?  In what way is the Holy Spirit the answer to the prayer Jesus teaches his disciples to pray in this passage?
  8. Read Luke 11:11-13.  Have you ever considered that one work of the Holy Spirit is to call us to embrace, pray for and look for evidence of the Kingdom of God in the present moment?  Have you received the deposit of the Holy Spirit? When you think about all the things you’ve been asking the Father for, when’s the last time you simply asked for the Holy Spirit?
  9. What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word?  Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
