Bible Study - MATTHEW KING AND KINGDOM: Disturbing the Peace

Sermon-Based Bible Study – March 20, 2022
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for? What is something you are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Read Matthew 21:1-15.  Have someone read this passage aloud and ask the Lord to help you see yourself in the story.  As you listened to the passage, which character in the story did you find yourself playing?  One of the disciples? Part of the cheering crowd? The owner of the donkey? The donkey? A palm branch? One of the “brigands” clogging up the Temple Courts? A blind or lame person? A child shouting Hosanna? What do you think the Lord is trying to help you see about yourself through this exercise?  About Him?
  5. What does the way that Jesus enters Jerusalem say to you about the character and priorities of Jesus?  Is there something you have “tied down” that you are being called to release for the Lord to use?
  6. What does it mean for a person to “see Jesus in our own streets?”  Are you in the habit of calling attention to Jesus when you see Him in our streets? How does it seem to affect those around you when you do? Is it “seismic?”
  7. What does the story of Jesus clearing the temple seem to be saying about the character and priorities of Jesus?  Who did Jesus make room for by clearing out the Temple Courts?
  8. Most of us don’t think of ourselves as thieves or brigands, but have you ever found yourself doing something you thought was important that made it more difficult for others to encounter God?
  9. Will we surrender to Jesus’s work on us as His temples that we might be more of an opportunity and less of obstacle when it comes to others drawing near to Him?
  10. What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word?  Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
