Bible Study - MATTHEW KING AND KINGDOM: Drink from It, All of You

Sermon-Based Bible Study – March 27, 2022
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for? What is something you are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Read Matthew 26:1-16.  In John 12:5 we learn that the value of the perfume used to anoint Jesus was worth “a year’s wages.”  If you were going to give a gift, the value of which was equal to a year’s salary, to whom or to what cause would it go?  Why?  As you read the story of Jesus being anointed by this woman, do you identify more with the woman making the gift, or the disciples evaluating the gift?  Why?
  5. What do you think it means for us today to worship Jesus with our treasure?  What are some practical ways we might do that?  What are some ways to honor/worship Jesus with our treasure other than providing for the under-resourced?
  6. Why do you think Jesus takes the extraordinary step of saying that her act of devotion will be remembered and told wherever the gospel is preached?  Can you think of any other act of devotion that is singled out like this?
  7. Chris pointed out that in this passage, the woman worships Jesus with her treasure, and Judas betrays Jesus for what Judas treasures.  What are some examples from your own life/experience where you worshipped Jesus with your treasure?  Are there examples you are aware of where you’ve betrayed Jesus for something you treasure?
  8. Read Matthew 26:17-30.  What are some of the connections you see between Jesus and the Passover lamb?  What does Jesus say about the bread or the cup that stands out to you as particularly meaningful right now?  Why?
  9. Jesus insists that all who are sitting at the table with him drink from the cup.  Who all is sitting at the table with Jesus?  What does this suggest to you about why it’s important to take communion when even when you feel “unworthy?”
  10. What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word?  Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
