Bible Study - HEARING GOD - Voice Prompts

Sermon-Based Bible Study – October 23, 2022
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for? What is something you are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Read John 10:1-6.  Part of recognizing or discerning the voice of God has something to do with knowing what to look for.  What would you say are the characteristics of God’s voice? What do you typically expect to hear when the Lord speaks, encouragement or conviction?  Which seems to be more characteristic of God to you? Why?
  5. Read 1 Corinthians 14:1-3.  Why does God give the gift of prophesy? Are there people in your life that God has used to speak words of encouragement/strength/comfort you? Do you think of them as prophets? Why?
  6. 1 Timothy 1:18-19.  Why is Paul encouraging Timothy to remember prophesies spoken over him?  Has there been a time in your walk with the Lord when your faith was shaken? What happened? What key memories do you go back to in times when you need encouragement or strength to keep the faith?
  7. Read Romans 12:6-8.  What difference, if any, is there between the gift of encouragement and the gift of prophesy?
  8. Read Isaiah 30:21-22. One characteristic of the voice of God is that it convicts us of sin.  What is the difference between conviction and condemnation?  What does conviction encourage us to do or believe? What does condemnation encourage us to do or believe?
  9. Read Hebrews 4:12-13. God’s voice is precise and penetrating when it comes to our thoughts and attitudes. Have you ever had a moment where God helped you see something in your heart (like greed, pride, envy, arrogance, etc.) that had been hidden from you for some time? Did that experience prompt you to run to God, or away from Him?
  10. Read 1 Corinthians 16:9.  When it comes to following God’s voice, what is your experience with encountering opposition? When you experience opposition as you follow God’s voice, does it make you doubt if you’ve heard HIs voice? Why?
  11. What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word?  Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
